General FAQ

I am a renter. How can I protect my belongings in the event of a flood?

There are steps that you can take yourself (without the permission of your landlord) to protect your apartment from flooding or your contents from flood damage. Renters can prepare long in advance for flooding by purchasing flood insurance and taking other precautions to protect their belongings, such as installing hooks and shelves where items can be stored out of harm’s way.

When flooding is imminent, renters can use traditional sandbags or sandbags tubes to block water from entering their apartment. Note that it is wise to store items above floor level before leaving town since a flood can strike with relatively little warning and you may not be able to make it home in time to elevate your items.
