Base Flood Elevation (BFE)

The elevation of the base (1 percent or 100-year) flood. The BFE is given in a community’s Flood Insurance Rate Map and Flood Insurance Study. A building’s flood insurance premium is determined by the relationship between the BFE and the height of the lowest floor of a structure.
